Agnatic

/æɡˈnætɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to kinship or relationship through the paternal line only, or descent from a common male ancestor.

Etymology

From Latin 'agnatus' (born to, related on father's side) derived from 'ad-' (to) + 'gnatus' (born). The term reflects patrilineal inheritance systems studied in Roman law and anthropology.

Kelly Says

Many ancient legal systems, including Roman law, used agnatic relationships to determine inheritance—only males counted as true relatives, which meant women could be legally erased from their own family trees!

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Adjective form of agnate, reflecting patrilineal legal and social structures from Roman law that subordinated women's property rights and inheritance claims.

Inclusive Usage

Reserve 'agnatic' for precise historical or genealogical contexts. Use 'patrilineal' or 'male-line descent' in general usage to be explicit about the system described.

Inclusive Alternatives

["patrilineal","male-line descent","paternal inheritance"]

Empowerment Note

Acknowledging agnatic systems as culturally specific rather than universal validates women's central roles in cognatic and matrilineal kinship structures.
