Definition
The view that the existence or nature of God is unknowable or unprovable. Agnostics maintain that human reason and experience cannot provide sufficient evidence to justify belief or disbelief in deities.
Etymology
Coined by British biologist Thomas Huxley in 1869 from Greek 'a-' (without) + 'gnostos' (known). Huxley created the term to describe his position that ultimate spiritual truths are beyond human knowledge.
