Aigrette

/eɪˈɡrɛt/ noun

Definition

A spray of gems or feathers worn on a hat or in the hair; also, the plume of feathers from an egret bird.

Etymology

From French 'aigrette' (egret/tuft), from Provencal 'aigron' (heron). The fashion industry nearly drove egrets to EXTINCTION for their plume feathers in the 1900s.

Kelly Says

Pretty hat decorations nearly KILLED an entire bird species! In the 1900s, egret feathers were worth more than GOLD! The outcry over this helped create the first conservation laws! Fashion has consequences! 🪶🐦‍⬛
