Air

/ɛər/ noun

Definition

Air is the invisible mixture of gases, mainly oxygen and nitrogen, that surrounds the Earth and that we breathe. The word can also mean the space above the ground or a light, graceful manner.

Etymology

From Latin *aer* via Old French, originally from Greek *aēr* meaning “air, atmosphere, mist.” The meaning expanded into ideas of openness and appearance.

Kelly Says

We talk about ‘air’ in physics, weather, music (“airy”), and even personality (“an air of confidence”). One tiny word quietly links breathing, space, style, and mood—all about what surrounds and fills us.
