Definition
Silly, scatterbrained, or not intelligent; having thoughts that are as insubstantial as air.
Etymology
From 'air' plus 'brained' (from 'brain,' Old English 'brægen'), humorously suggesting a head full of air instead of sensible thoughts.
Kelly Says
This insult from the 18th century used 'air' to mean 'empty space'—so calling someone airbrained was like saying their head was just an empty cavity, which was considered pretty harsh back then!
