Aisle

/aɪl/ noun

Definition

An aisle is a long passage between rows of seats, shelves, or other objects, where people can walk. You see aisles in places like airplanes, churches, theaters, and supermarkets.

Etymology

From Old French *ele* or *aille* “wing of a building,” from Latin *ala* “wing.” It once referred to the side parts of a church, like wings off the main hall.

Kelly Says

The silent ‘s’ in *aisle* is a spelling ghost from French. The original idea of a ‘wing’ of a building survives whenever you walk down the side space of a church or plane instead of the crowded middle.
