Albumin

/ælˈbjumɪn/ noun

Definition

The most abundant protein in blood plasma, produced by the liver to maintain blood volume and transport various substances. Low levels indicate liver disease, kidney disease, or malnutrition.

Etymology

From Latin 'albus' (white), named in 1838 for the white color of coagulated egg albumin. The term was extended to blood proteins because they behave similarly when heated, turning white and solid.

Kelly Says

Albumin is like blood's molecular sponge - it holds onto water and keeps your blood volume stable! Without enough albumin, fluid leaks out of blood vessels into tissues, causing swelling. It's also a taxi service, carrying hormones, drugs, and fatty acids throughout your body.
