Definition
An aquatic insect with delicate wings, dark coloring, and elongated body, found near streams and classified in the order Megaloptera.
Etymology
From Old English alor (alder tree) + fly (insect), named for the trees where these insects are commonly observed near their preferred freshwater habitats.
Kelly Says
Though they look fragile, alderfly larvae are fierce ambush predators in streams—evolution gave them powerful jaws and quick reflexes to hunt in the dark underwater world.
