Algidness

/ˈælɡɪdnəs/ noun

Definition

The quality or state of being algid; the characteristic of having a cold or cool quality.

Etymology

From algid plus the Germanic suffix -ness, creating an alternative abstract noun to algidity. While both mean the same thing, -ness is more common in everyday English than the Latinate -ity ending.

Kelly Says

In English, we often have two ways to say the same thing—'algidity' for formal medical writing, 'algidness' for literature—showing how languages keep old words alive by creating synonyms.
