Definition
An alien is a being from another world or planet, or a person who is not a citizen of the country they are in. As an adjective, it means strange, foreign, or very different from what is usual.
Etymology
From Latin *aliēnus* “belonging to another, foreign,” from *alius* “other.” It first referred to foreigners before gaining the science-fiction sense.
Kelly Says
Alien at its core just means “other people’s, not ours.” The jump from ‘foreigners’ to ‘space creatures’ shows how powerful the idea of “the other” is—once we had the word, we pointed it at the entire universe.
