Allelotropy

/ˌæl.ə.ˈlɒt.rə.pi/ noun

Definition

A type of chemical behavior where an element exists in different forms that have distinctly different properties in the same physical state.

Etymology

From Greek 'allelos' (other, one another) and 'tropos' (turn, direction). The term was coined in chemistry to describe how substances can transform into alternative configurations while remaining the same element.

Kelly Says

Allelotropy is like a chemical identity crisis—oxygen can be either O₂ or O₃ (ozone), both invisible gases but with completely different superpowers! It's similar to allotropism but specifically describes the change from one form to another.
