Allopathy

/æˈlɒpəθi/ noun

Definition

The system of medical practice that treats diseases by using substances or procedures that produce effects opposite or contrary to the symptoms being treated.

Etymology

From Greek 'allo-' (other) + 'pathos' (disease, suffering). Coined in 1810 by German physician Samuel Hahnemann to describe conventional medicine as opposed to his homeopathic system.

Kelly Says

The term 'allopathy' is actually a homeopathic doctor's insult—Hahnemann invented it as a put-down, but conventional medicine essentially said 'thanks!' and kept curing people.
