Definition
The property of an element existing in two or more different physical forms in the same physical state, with different properties.
Etymology
From Greek 'allo-' (other) and '-trophy' (from tropos, meaning turning). The term was coined in 1841 by Swedish chemist J.J. Berzelius to describe why some elements seemed to behave differently, eventually leading to the discovery that these were different structural forms.

Allotropy solved a huge mystery in early chemistry—scientists couldn't explain why the same element behaved so differently in different conditions until they realized atoms could arrange themselves into entirely new configurations, like carbon becoming diamond or graphite.
