Relating to or consisting of sediment deposited by flowing water, especially the fertile soil found in river valleys, deltas, and floodplains. These deposits create some of the world's most productive agricultural land.
Etymology
From Latin 'alluvialis,' derived from 'alluvium' (material washed against). The adjective form developed in the 18th century as scientists began classifying different types of sedimentary deposits and their origins.

California's Central Valley sits on alluvial deposits up to 3,000 feet thick - this massive accumulation of river-deposited sediment from the Sierra Nevada creates the incredibly fertile farmland that produces much of America's fruits and vegetables! The term 'alluvial gold' refers to gold flakes and nuggets found in river gravels, which sparked many gold rushes including California's famous 1849 rush.
