Definition
The plural of alouette; multiple larks or a reference to the famous French song 'Alouettes.'
Etymology
French plural form of 'alouette' created by adding '-s.' The song 'Alouettes, gentilles alouettes' dates to at least the 18th century.
Kelly Says
Generations of French and Canadian children have sung about plucking larks' feathers in 'Alouettes'—a nursery rhyme so old nobody remembers who wrote it. The song survived because it rhymes and bounces, showing how melody preserves language.
