To arrange words, names, or items in the order of the letters of the alphabet from A to Z.

Etymology

From alphabet + -ize (a suffix meaning to make or cause to become). Alphabet derives from Greek letters alpha and beta. The -ize suffix comes from Greek -izein and became productive in English through French and Latin influence.
