Definition
A brass wind instrument similar to a French horn or saxhorn, with a deeper tone than a cornet and used in military and concert bands.
Etymology
From German Althorn, combining 'alt' (high or alto in pitch) and 'horn.' It's a mid-range brass instrument that sits between the clarion and bass instruments in a band.
Kelly Says
The althorn is almost extinct in modern bands, but it created a family of 'alt' instruments (saxophone, altissimo flute) where 'alt' became a universal prefix meaning 'higher register' rather than just pitch.
