Definition
An ancient Egyptian city and capital built by Pharaoh Akhenaten, known for its revolutionary art style and religious changes around 1350 BCE.
Etymology
From the modern Arabic name for the site in upper Egypt where the city was located. The ancient Egyptian name was Akhetaten, meaning 'horizon of the Aten.' The term was Latinized and adopted by Egyptologists in the 19th century.
Kelly Says
Amarna represents one of history's most dramatic religious revolutions—Akhenaten suddenly declared the sun disk (Aten) the only god, shaking a 2,000-year-old religious system. The art from Amarna broke all the rules too, showing the pharaoh as a real person with a potbelly and family, which shocked Egyptians who expected perfect, rigid depictions.
