Ambient

/ˈæmbiənt/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the surrounding environment or atmosphere. It often describes background conditions like light, temperature, or sound.

Etymology

From Latin *ambiēns, ambientis*, the present participle of *ambīre* (“to go around, surround”), from *ambi-* (“around”) and *īre* (“to go”). It entered English in scientific and descriptive contexts.

Kelly Says

“Ambient” literally means “going around,” like something that wraps around you. That’s why we talk about ambient music or ambient light—they don’t attack you; they surround you. It’s the difference between a spotlight and a soft glow filling the room.
