A genus of small blind or nearly-blind fish found in caves and underground waters of North America.
From Greek 'amblys' (blunt, dull) + 'ops' (eye), literally 'blunt-eyed.' Named by naturalists in the 1800s to describe these remarkable cave-dwelling fish with vestigial or absent eyes.
