Amethysts

/ˈæməθɪsts/ noun

Definition

Plural of amethyst; multiple purple or violet varieties of quartz that are valued as gemstones.

Etymology

From Greek 'amethystos' (not intoxicating), from 'a-' (not) + 'methuskein' (to intoxicate). The ancient Greeks believed these purple crystals had magical anti-intoxication properties, hence the name.

Kelly Says

Amethysts are basically the world's most affordable purple gemstone, which is why ancient royalty loved them—until someone discovered huge deposits in Brazil and they stopped being rare, showing that even 'precious' stones are just a matter of supply and scarcity.
