Definition
At, in, or toward the middle of a ship, especially relating to position or movement along the ship's length.
Etymology
From amidship + -s (making it plural or adding emphasis), developing in English nautical terminology by the 1600s. The '-s' variant became standard in naval usage.
Kelly Says
The extra 's' in 'amidships' actually made it the preferred naval term because sailors needed a clear adverb form to shout orders—'Secure the line amidships!' leaves no doubt where you mean on that rolling ship.
