Definition
Plural form of amitosis; multiple instances of cell division that occurs without the formation of a nucleus's chromatic spindle.
Etymology
From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'mitos' (thread), the '-osis' suffix (a process or condition) creates the biological term. 'Amitosis' refers to a primitive form of cell division observed in some organisms without the organized spindle apparatus.

Scientists discovered amitosis in the 1800s and initially thought it was common in cells, but modern microscopy showed it's rare and often a sign of cell death—what looked like a simple division mechanism turned out to be cellular breakdown.
