Amman

/ɑːˈmɑːn/ proper noun

Definition

The capital and largest city of Jordan, located in the north-central part of the country. A major cultural and economic center in the Middle East with ancient historical significance.

Etymology

Named after the Ammonites, an ancient Semitic people who established the city as Rabbath Ammon. The name comes from the Semitic root related to 'people' or 'nation'. The city was later called Philadelphia by the Greeks and Romans before reverting to a form of its original name under Arab rule.

Kelly Says

Amman is remarkable for being continuously inhabited for over 8,000 years, making it one of the world's oldest continuously occupied cities. What's fascinating is how it transforms from ancient ruins on its famous hills to a thoroughly modern metropolis - you can literally walk from Bronze Age structures to contemporary shopping centers in the same neighborhood, creating a living timeline of human civilization.
