Definition
Lifeless, spiritless, or dull; lacking energy or vitality.
Etymology
From Old French amort, from Latin ad- (toward) + mort (death). Originally meaning 'toward death' or 'deathlike,' it evolved to mean lacking life or spirit.
Kelly Says
Shakespeare would use 'amort' to describe someone acting like a zombie—spiritually dead while still breathing—which is why it shows up in old plays to describe characters who've given up on life.
