Amphibryous

/æmˈfɪbriəs/ adjective

Definition

In botany, describing an embryo or seed that lacks a clearly defined main root or shoot and grows from both ends.

Etymology

From Greek amphi- 'both' combined with bryon 'moss' or referring to growing structures. The term describes plants where growth isn't polarized toward one direction, as in most seeds.

Kelly Says

Some plant embryos are amphibryous—they're basically indecisive about which end should become roots and which should become shoots, so they can sometimes grow either way!
