Anaclastic

/ˌænəˈklæstɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the breaking or reversal of a metrical pattern in poetry, or pertaining to the refraction of light.

Etymology

From Greek anaklastikos (capable of breaking back), from anaklasis. In physics, it also refers to refraction, the bending of light as it passes through different materials.

Kelly Says

Anaclastic principles apply both to poetry—where you break rhythmic expectations—and to physics, where light 'breaks' its straight path when entering water; it's cool how the same root word applies to such different fields!
