Anadromous

/əˈnædrəməs/ adjective

Definition

Describing fish that are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean to mature, then return to freshwater to spawn. This complex life cycle includes salmon, sturgeon, and some lampreys.

Etymology

From Greek 'anadromos' meaning 'running upward', from 'ana' (up) and 'dromos' (running). The term describes the upstream journey these fish make from the sea back to their birthplace.

Kelly Says

Anadromous fish are nature's ultimate navigators, with salmon able to return to the exact stream where they were born after traveling thousands of miles in the ocean! They bring marine nutrients inland, fertilizing entire forest ecosystems when they die after spawning.
