Definition
The state of temporary loss of sensation or consciousness, usually produced by drugs for medical purposes.
Etymology
From Greek 'an-' (without) + 'aisthesis' (sensation or feeling) + '-is' (a noun suffix). This is an archaic or variant spelling of 'anaesthesia,' more common in older or British medical texts.
Kelly Says
Before the 1840s, surgery meant extreme pain—surgeons had to work incredibly fast, sometimes amputating limbs in under a minute; the discovery of anaesthesia is considered one of the greatest medical breakthroughs in human history.
