Anapsid

/əˈnæpsɪd/ noun

Definition

A prehistoric reptile with a skull that lacks temporal openings or fenestrae, representing one of the earliest types of reptile from the Carboniferous period.

Etymology

From Greek 'an-' (without) and 'apsis' (arch, vault), referring to the absence of openings in the skull roof. Coined in paleontology to classify early reptiles.

Kelly Says

Anapsids were the original reptiles—their solid skulls were so different from all later reptiles that scientists now think they might be in a class entirely by themselves, not true reptiles at all.
