Definition
Lacking a brain or having severely underdeveloped brain tissue, describing the state of being born with anencephaly.
Etymology
From Greek an- (without) plus encephalous (relating to brain), literally 'without brain.' An adjective form describing organisms or fetuses lacking normal brain development.

While the term 'anencephalous' sounds clinical and detached, it describes one of the most serious birth defects—infants born with this condition cannot survive long after birth because the brain controls all vital functions including breathing and heart rate.
