Definition
In Tupi-Guarani Indigenous cultures, a protective spirit or demon-like being that attaches itself to a person.
Etymology
From Tupi 'anhang' meaning spirit or demon. Documented by Portuguese missionaries and naturalists in Brazil from the 16th century onward.
Kelly Says
The anhang is kind of like having a personal guardian spirit, except it might not always be friendly—it's a fascinating example of how different cultures have entirely different concepts of the spirit world!
