Definition
A device or apparatus that lifts or supports a vehicle by the ankle area or lower leg, or historically, a piece of torture equipment that immobilized the ankle.
Etymology
Compound from "ankle" and "jack," where jack derives from the proper name Jacques and came to mean a device or tool (like a car jack). The compound emerged in both mechanical and dark historical contexts.
Kelly Says
The medieval torture version of anklejacks reveals how creative (and cruel) people were with compound words—they named terrible devices by describing exactly what they attacked and what they did.
