Definition
A formal or public announcement, especially in theater or a ceremony where something important is declared to an audience.
Etymology
From French 'annonce' (announcement), derived from Latin 'annuntiare' meaning 'to announce' (from 'ad-' meaning 'to' and 'nuntiare' meaning 'to report'). The word entered English through Norman French after 1066 and retained its formal, theatrical quality.
Kelly Says
In classical theater, the 'annonce' was how audiences first learned the plot—an actor would step forward and literally announce what the play would be about, a tradition that shaped how stories have been introduced for over 2,000 years.
