Definition
Existing or occurring without awareness or consciousness; not involving thought or reflection.
Etymology
From Greek 'an-' (without) + 'noetic' (relating to the mind). Noetic comes from 'nous' (mind/intellect), so anoetic literally means 'without mind-related activity.'
Kelly Says
When you automatically tie your shoes or doodle while daydreaming, that's anoetic behavior—your brain is working, but you're not consciously thinking about it. Psychologists use this term to distinguish between automatic responses and deliberate, thoughtful actions.
