Definition
A coarse-grained igneous rock composed primarily of plagioclase feldspar, commonly found on the Moon.
Etymology
From Greek 'an-' (without) + 'orthos' (correct) + '-ite' (rock suffix). Named because its primary feldspar is plagioclase rather than orthoclase, the 'correct' or expected variety.
Kelly Says
Apollo astronauts brought back moon rocks that were anorthosite, and scientists realized this lunar highland rock is one of the oldest materials in the solar system—making the Moon's surface a time capsule of planetary formation.
