A genus of seabirds commonly known as noddies, small dark-colored terns found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide.
From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'nous' (mind), supposedly referring to the birds' supposed lack of intelligence or wariness. The term was applied taxonomically to this genus of terns.
Noddies got their common name because they nod their heads while flying—and they're called 'anous' because sailors thought they were stupid, when really they're just incredibly tame and curious about humans!
