Anoxia

/ænˈɒksiə/ noun

Definition

Complete or near-complete absence of oxygen reaching body tissues; a severe condition where tissues don't receive enough oxygen to function.

Etymology

From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'oxys' (oxygen). Coined in medical terminology to distinguish from hypoxia (partial oxygen deprivation). Emerged prominently in 20th century medicine.

Kelly Says

Anoxia is one of the few medical terms where the prefix actually tells the truth—'a-' really does mean 'without,' unlike 'anemia' which doesn't mean 'without blood' but 'lacking red cells'!
