Anthela

/ænˈθiːlə/ noun

Definition

A genus of moths in the family Erebidae, native to Australia, some species of which have urticating (stinging) caterpillars.

Etymology

From Greek anthos (flower), as many early naturalists named insects after the plants they frequented. The genus was formally described in the 19th century during European colonial exploration of Australia.

Kelly Says

Anthela caterpillars are covered in tiny hairs that cause intense itching and irritation — Australian kids learn early to never touch the 'bag shelter' moth caterpillars, making them one of nature's most memorable warnings.
