Anthem

/ˈæn.θəm/ noun

Definition

An anthem is a song that is especially important to a group of people, often expressing strong feelings of pride, belief, or identity. National anthems are official songs of countries.

Etymology

From Old English 'antefn' meaning 'a church song', from Greek 'antiphōnon' meaning 'sung in response'. Originally, it referred to religious call-and-response singing.

Kelly Says

Modern 'anthems' can be anything from national hymns to pop songs that a generation claims as its voice. When a crowd sings an anthem together, it’s like a shortcut to feeling 'we' instead of just 'me'.
