Definition
Death or necrosis of tissue that becomes coal-black, especially referring to gangrene or severe tissue damage.
Etymology
From anthracis (Greek 'coal') + necrosis (Greek nekros, 'death'). This medical term combines coal-black appearance with tissue death.

In old medical texts, doctors used 'anthraconecrosis' to describe the worst gangrene—the tissue would literally turn black like coal before falling off, and it was a death sentence before antibiotics.
