Anticlimactical

/ˌæntiˌklaɪˈmæktɪkəl/ adjective

Definition

Disappointing because it is much less exciting or impressive than expected; the opposite of climactic.

Etymology

From anti- (against) + climactical (relating to climax, from Greek 'klimax' meaning ladder). This term emerged in literary criticism to describe narratives that fail to build to satisfying conclusions.

Kelly Says

Movie studios study this word obsessively—the 'anticlimactical ending' is a box office killer because human brains are wired to expect buildup and payoff; violating that expectation feels broken.
