Definition
Opposing, rejecting, or characterized by opposition to expressionistic art, style, or philosophy.
Etymology
From anti- + expressionistic (adjective form of expressionism). Developed in 20th-century art and literary criticism to describe movements and styles that deliberately avoided emotional intensity or subjective feeling in favor of objectivity or formalism.
Kelly Says
When artists went antiexpressionistic, they were basically saying 'your feelings aren't interesting—only the pure structure of color, form, and space matter,' which made some people feel deeply validated and others absolutely furious.
