Antiman

/ænˌtɪˈmæn/ noun

Definition

A person or entity opposed to men or masculinity; in science fiction, a being designed to oppose or counteract mankind.

Etymology

From 'anti-' + 'man' (from Germanic roots). A rare and primarily fictional term, emerging in pulp science fiction of the 1920s-1940s.

Kelly Says

Pulp sci-fi magazines used 'antiman' as shorthand for mechanical or alien beings opposing humanity—but the word never gained scientific currency because biology doesn't really work that way; opposition requires opposing interests, not opposing genders.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Carries the same asymmetry as 'antimale'—'man' is used as the default human (cf. 'mankind'), so 'anti-man' frames opposition to the unmarked category rather than to specific male-centered practices or ideology.

Inclusive Usage

Replace with precise term: 'opposing patriarchy,' 'rejecting male-centric systems,' or 'pro-gender-equity' as context requires.

Inclusive Alternatives

["antipatriarchal","opposing male-centric ideology","pro-gender-equity"]

Empowerment Note

Feminist linguists documented how 'man' absorbed universal meaning while 'woman' remained marked/specific—correcting this requires naming the system, not the people.
