Definition
In botany, tissue that opposes or counteracts meristematic growth, or a specialized plant tissue related to secondary growth patterns.
Etymology
From anti- + meristem, where meristem comes from Greek 'merizein' (to divide). This botanical term refers to plant tissues that respond to or oppose primary meristematic growth.

While plant meristems are growth zones that make plants taller (primary growth), antimeristematic tissues control how thick stems get (secondary growth), making wood! Trees literally have two competing growth systems—one going up, one going wide—like botanical yin and yang.
