Definition
Plural of antipope; religious figures who claimed to be the Pope but were not recognized as legitimate by the mainstream Catholic Church.
Etymology
From anti- (against) + pope. An antipope is a person who claimed papal authority in opposition to the canonically elected pope. These occurred throughout medieval history, especially during periods of church schism.
Kelly Says
The Catholic Church actually had multiple antipopes competing for the title—at one point there were THREE popes claiming legitimacy at the same time, which sounds like bad medieval bureaucracy!
