Antiroyalism

/æntiˈroɪəlɪzəm/ noun

Definition

Political opposition to monarchy and the belief that royalty should be abolished or its powers severely limited.

Etymology

From anti- (against) + royalism. Royalism means support for monarchy. This term emerged prominently during the 17th-19th centuries in Europe and America.

Kelly Says

Antiroyalism powered major revolutions—it transformed from being radical heresy (you could be executed for it!) to becoming normal democratic thinking, which is why most countries today aren't monarchies anymore.
