Antirrhinum

/ænˈtɪrɪnəm/ noun

Definition

A genus of flowering plants commonly known as snapdragons, with distinctive two-lipped flowers.

Etymology

From Greek anti- (against) + rhinum (nose), because the flower's shape resembles a nose or snout. The plant was named descriptively based on its appearance. Also spelled Antirrhinum.

Kelly Says

Snapdragons are called Antirrhinum because the Greeks thought the flowers looked like noses—if you squeeze the sides of a snapdragon, it actually does look like a mouth talking, which is why kids have loved them for centuries.
