Definition
Being in direct opposition; forming an antithesis or stark contrast with something else.
Etymology
From antithesis + -ic (adjective suffix). This adjective allows writers to describe things as having the nature of an antithesis.
Kelly Says
The famous phrase 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times' from Dickens is perfectly antithetic—these two phrases are complete opposites, and that's exactly what makes the opening so memorable.
