Ants

/ænts/ noun

Definition

Small social insects that live in organized colonies and are known for their industrious behavior and complex social structures.

Etymology

From Old English æmette, related to German Ameise. The modern form 'ant' emerged through phonetic reduction, losing the middle syllable that's preserved in 'emmet', an archaic term for ant.

Kelly Says

Ants are among the few creatures besides humans that practice agriculture, cultivating fungus gardens and 'farming' aphids for their honeydew secretions. Some species have been observed using tools and even conducting what appears to be warfare with sophisticated battle strategies.
